Oats to the rescue

Most of my days start with a bowl of porridge. Actually, the day starts with a cup of tea, then porridge. Coffee comes later. I tend to feel the cold more than others, which can make getting up and ready during the colder months a real struggle. Staying in bed or lounging around in my dressing gown often seems much more appealing than getting myself washed, dressed and starting the day.

Oats to the rescue! Porridge gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that takes the edge off of an early start – like putting on clothes that have been sat on a radiator on an chilly morning. Bonus: It also keeps the hunger pangs away for a while, which is great if you’re a serial snacker like me.

I add a scoop of flavoured protein powder to my porridge. I find this gives it a creamier texture, improves it nutritionally, and just makes it a bit more ‘exciting’. I’m actually a fan of plain porridge oats, but appreciate it can be an acquired taste as it’s pretty bland. I make my porridge with unsweetened almond milk too, which is quite bitter on its own. Again, an acquired taste. I don’t need the sugars in cow’s milk or sweetened almond as the flavoured protein is sweet enough.

Ingredients

  • 30g Oats
  • 200ml Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 Scoop Flavoured Protein Powder
  • Cold Water (Optional)

Approx 250kcal

How do I make it?

I first measure out my oats and then tip them into a microwavable bowl. Next, I add the almond milk and give the mix a good stir. Then the bowl goes in the microwave for 1 minute. It gets a quick stir, then goes back in for another minute. When that’s finished, the porridge is done. I then stir in the scoop of protein powder, adding a splash of cold water if the mix is too thick.

That’s it! It gets eaten rather quickly and then I’m good to go.
